Frequently asked questions

What is the Econoliser?

The Econoliser is a water saving electric knife sanitisation system that replaces conventional continuous flow sterilisers. It provides consistent high-temperature sanitisation using significantly less water and energy. For more information, please visit: econoliser.com

Who is the Econoliser designed for?

The system is suited to meat processors looking to reduce water & energy consumption, reduce boiler load, and improve equipment-level hygiene control.

How does it work?

The unit heats water using an electric element to >90°C and only operates when knives or tools are inserted. Eliminating the need for continuous hot water running and reduces wasted energy and water.

What does the business case look like?

Typical simple payback ranges from 6 to 18 months, depending on water and energy rates

What temperature does the Econoliser run at?

The system meets industry requirements of 82°C minimum and generally operates at 90°C or above to ensure compliance.

How quickly does it reach operating temperature?

Most units reach sterilisation temperature within 90 seconds.

What happens if the site has variable processing days?

Because the system only heats when required, low use periods result in savings without affecting readiness for sterilisation.

How much water does the system use compared to traditional steriliser?

Traditional systems may run continuously throughout a shift, using on average 9L/min. The Econoliser only circulates water when a knife is inserted, using 140mL per cycle.

How many knives or tools can be sterilised at once?

Standard twin knife units are designed for one or two per station.

How much time does it take to sterilise a knife?

The unit is configured to take 4.5 seconds per cycle.

Will this help me improve my safety?

The unit removes the hazard of an open hot water bath, improving operator safety and the working environment.

Does the Econoliser comply with industry regulations?

Yes. The system is compliant with AS 4696 and has been reviewed and accepted by DAFF. Independent AMPC-funded validation confirmed microbiological equivalence to conventional continuous-flow sterilisers under standard operating conditions.

What maintenance is required?

The removable cassette design supports fast changeout and reduced downtime.

Is the Econoliser cassette considered a pressure vessel?

The cassette is not a pressure vessel. It is too small to be classed as a pressure vessel due to the low stored energy (pressure x volume). Mains water pressure is used as the driving force to cycle water through the unit by opening and closing the inlet solenoid valve. The outlet is technically open to atmosphere, hence part of the reason it is not classified as a pressure vessel.

In the event of a controls failure – will the element remain on?

The element power is controlled by a Solid State Relay (SSR), and has several safety features in place to protect against overheating, including:

  • Water heater liquid level probe to ensure there’s always sufficient water in the cassette for the element to transfer heat.
  • Temperature probe to ensure the vessel temperature is controlled to the nominated temperature setpoint;
  • Thermal cut out switch which isolates power to the element in the event of vessel overheating.
    • In the unlikely event that all controls and safeguards fail, and the makeup solenoid valve remained closed – the vessel would boil over, with water/water vapour spilling out through the nozzles to the drain. If this situation continued, the element would breakdown and the circuit protection device will trip, isolating electricity supply from the unit.
